Background

When Anushka first began evaluating MBA programs, she was a Manager of Business Development at Schneider Electric after spending more than six years working across product development, manufacturing, supply chain, and commercial functions. An Electrical Engineering graduate from NIT Durgapur, she had ranked among the top students in her batch and built a career defined by rapid progression, operational depth, and cross-functional responsibility.

Her experience ranged from designing Air Circuit Breakers to leading Industry 4.0 initiatives within Schneider Electric’s manufacturing ecosystem. Over time, she evolved from a technical engineering role into customer-facing business leadership, eventually being recognized among the company’s top digital talent within its global supply chain operations.

The Core Challenge

The primary challenge was not capability. It was perception.

A large part of Anushka’s profile risked being interpreted narrowly through the lens of domestic manufacturing and engineering execution. While her work experience showed clear progression and responsibility, there was concern around the absence of conventional international exposure often associated with highly competitive MBA applicants.

There were also internal barriers around perfectionism and self-doubt. Anushka often placed significant pressure on herself to find the “right” solution before acting, which sometimes translated into hesitation in high-pressure environments. At the same time, as a woman operating within a heavily male-dominated industrial sector, the application needed to position her experiences not as obstacles alone, but as a unique leadership perspective.

The Strategic Positioning

One of our earliest priorities was repositioning Anushka from a manufacturing engineer into a broader business and leadership candidate with strong commercial instincts.

Instead of focusing only on technical accomplishments, the application highlighted her ability to operate across the full business lifecycle, from engineering and operations to sales, customer relationships, and strategic execution. Her transition into business development became an important part of demonstrating adaptability and leadership evolution.

A particularly important part of the narrative centered around her “Tech Talk” initiative during the second COVID wave. At a time when traditional sales engagement had become difficult, she created a knowledge-sharing platform that strengthened internal collaboration, improved customer engagement, and contributed to significant business growth across key accounts.

The Positioning and Scholarship Strategy

The strategy focused heavily on demonstrating leadership maturity, analytical rigor, and long-term business potential beyond the manufacturing domain alone.

Her 730 GMAT score became an important part of reinforcing that positioning, particularly when combined with the scale and diversity of her experience at Schneider Electric. At the same time, the applications emphasized her ability to navigate ambiguity, lead across functions, and contribute meaningfully within evolving industrial and digital ecosystems.

We also focused on bringing balance and personality into the application through her long-standing involvement in Bharatanatyam and music, helping present her as a more rounded and multidimensional candidate beyond her technical background.

The Outcome

Anushka secured admits to ISB, IIM Ahmedabad, IIM Bangalore, and IIM Calcutta.

IIM Bangalore also awarded her a scholarship of INR 10 lakhs in recognition of her leadership potential and overall profile strength.

Key Takeaway

Applicants from manufacturing and engineering backgrounds are often far more versatile than their resumes initially suggest. The real challenge is demonstrating leadership breadth, business orientation, and the ability to operate across functions rather than within a single technical identity.

In highly competitive MBA admissions, thoughtful positioning and a clearly articulated growth trajectory can often help technically strong applicants stand out beyond conventional profile assumptions.
