Background

When Khukan first began evaluating MBA programs, he was a Senior Joint Manager at Dabur India leading operations and maintenance at one of the company’s largest manufacturing facilities. An Electrical Engineering graduate from Jorhat Engineering College, he had consistently ranked among the top students in his batch and built a career defined by operational responsibility, technical depth, and execution under pressure.

His professional experience included managing large-scale manufacturing systems, completing a major greenfield project while recovering from a severe road accident, and leading the in-house development of a COVID-19 sanitization tunnel that helped save the company significant operational costs during the pandemic.

The Core Challenge

The primary challenge was not capability. It was visibility.

A large part of Khukan’s profile initially came across as highly technical and operational, with insufficient visibility into the person, motivations, and leadership philosophy behind the achievements. While there was clear evidence of resilience and ownership, the application lacked the emotional depth and personal narrative required to stand out in a highly competitive IIM applicant pool.

The second challenge was his low GMAT score from an earlier application cycle, which created additional pressure to demonstrate academic readiness and overall managerial potential more convincingly through the rest of the application.

The Strategic Positioning

One of our earliest priorities was uncovering the deeper personal motivations shaping Khukan’s career ambitions.

Through multiple conversations, a recurring theme emerged around perseverance, humility, and his long-standing connection to the food industry. A particularly important part of the narrative came from his childhood experiences helping his father sell local delicacies from a food cart in Tezpur. That memory became central to explaining both his relationship with the food sector and his long-term aspiration to transition from operations into Marketing and Brand Management.

From there, the application positioned his technical and operational background not as a limitation, but as the foundation for a broader leadership journey within the consumer and food industry.

The Communication and Interview Strategy

A major part of the process focused on helping Khukan communicate his experiences with greater clarity and confidence.

Rather than treating his reserved personality as a weakness, the application reframed it as composure under pressure and quiet reliability in high-stakes environments. His recommendation letters from senior leaders at Dabur became important validation of his ability to lead teams, take ownership, and execute responsibly under demanding conditions.

We also focused heavily on bringing specificity and personality into the application through examples of initiative and problem-solving, including his redesign of a discounted packaging line that generated significant cost savings for the company.

The Outcome

Khukan secured interview invites from the top IIMs including Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Calcutta, Indore, Lucknow, and Kozhikode.

He eventually earned final admits to IIM Indore, IIM Lucknow, and IIM Kozhikode.

Key Takeaway

Strong MBA applicants are not always the loudest or most outwardly polished candidates. In many cases, the deeper challenge is learning how to communicate professional depth, resilience, and long-term ambition with clarity and authenticity.

In highly competitive MBA admissions, thoughtful positioning and honest storytelling can often help reserved applicants stand out far beyond conventional profile metrics.
